I’m not big on “about us” pages… I think if you’ve read through my website – you know who I am and what I stand for. But – you’re reading this… so I guess you want more information – or at least you want it consolidated into one place.
My name is Beth Vickrey and I am the person behind MacDanes. You’ve met some of my dogs throughout the website - One that you didn’t meet, and where this all began, is “Volvo” ~ yes like in the car. My husband has a warped sense of humor… I wanted a Volvo (as in car); he brought me home this darling little puppy and declared “here is your Volvo”. That was 1984… and my introduction into the world of purebred dogs. As all novices do, I wanted a puppy from him; he was spectacular… wasn’t he? I took him to a dog show for evaluation from a local Breeder, and quickly learned that my gorgeous boy was not exactly what they were looking for.
After the loss of Volvo, I went looking for a brindle puppy. I had given up the idiotic notion that one had to have a puppy from ones beloved dog, decided to leave that to the Breeders, and just wanted a healthy “pet” puppy – neutering was good with me! What I fell in love with was a fawn boy. He was a show quality puppy, and in order to bring my bundle home I had to promise to “give showing a try”. We made a deal with his Breeder that if either we, or the dog, hated it – we would quit. Well, in all honesty, the dog hated it, the husband hated it, but I loved it – I finished him in spite of himself!
Well, it’s now been quite a few years, dogs, puppies and shows later (all fawn! –I keep trying for brindle, I swear the next one will be brindle)… I still love this Breed, I still love showing. Some people spend their weekends chasing little white balls around the golf course, I spent mine chasing points and ribbons around the ring (actually, my handler does the running around the ring – I just do the pacing outside). –And I’ve made some Great friends (you know who you are!!!).
My dogs live inside the house, sit on my couch and sleep in my bedroom. Yes, I show my dogs, but being a show dog is only a small part of their lives – they are “my furry children”. I don’t believe in “outside dogs”. I don’t believe in “guard dogs”. And I don’t believe in purchasing puppies from backyard breeders or pet stores! –Don’t let me get started…
MacDanes was located in Southern California (for the last 20+ years), as of 2007 we are residents of the Fabulous Florida Keys. We're enjoying life on a tiny island called No Name Key, yep, that's really the name of the island! The dogs are Really loving the Island life, lazy suits them - LOL! -I’m sorry, but no, you may not come and visit … we are not a kennel, we are private Breeder/Exhibitor – the only time I allow visitations are for persons that have been accepted as a puppy applicant. -Or for approved persons wishing to meet our Stud dogs. -I will be more than happy to meet with you/speak with you at any show that I am attending, and I will be happy to introduce you to the dog(s) that I am exhibiting, or associated with, at that show. -I return all emails (but, please fill in the subject line as I do not open “blank” & unknown emails). -We breed rarely. No bitch in my home would be bred more than twice; and our Stud dogs are only bred when we feel that they are of exception quality (conformation & health-wise) and have something to contribute to the Breed – we only breed to bitches that are of such quality as well. -Yes, you can contact me for a puppy application to be on our waiting list –But, in all honestly, it’s best to keep checking our website for breeding announcements and updates (as I do lose papers and crash computers!).
You will not find me pictured anywhere else on the website, but here:
I am actively involved in the Dane community: I am a member of the Great Dane Club of America, have attended Nationals since 1999, and on the Ways & Means committee for the 2005 Nationals. I (until my departure) was also a member of the Great Dane Club of California; I have served on the 2001 Internet Committee, as the 2002 Watchdog/AKC Legislative Liaison, and I am the GDCC Webstore Founder & Chair (since ‘03). -And I am a huge fan and supporter of Rescue. (Only adopt from a “legitimate” Rescue – one affiliated with a Great Dane Club).
I’ve often been asked who my mentor in the Breed has been. And while I’ve had the honor and pleasure of learning from so many of the greats in the Breed, my mentor is Donna Chappel of Varick Great Danes.Donna brings to me not only great knowledge of the Breed, breeding, pedigrees, health issues, etc.; but she brings me a wonderful friendship that has lasted through the years.
I don’t know where my dog show adventures will take me next; I have “dreams” for my dogs - and hopes of achieving them. I suspect that one of Mugger's children will fulfill that dream for me. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the journey.
I hope that this provided you with the information that you where looking for. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. ~Beth Beth@MacDanes.com
